Autism Treatment

Autism can occur in children as early as infancy and can appear out of nowhere up to the age of two years.  Children may develop at a normal rate and suddenly become withdrawn, lose language skills that have been acquired or aggressive.  A child with autism generally has signs of not being able to interact and communicate with others. Autism typically affects three areas of development:  language, behavior and social interaction.  Typically children with autism have signs of lower than normal intelligence and are slow to gain skills or knowledge.  Most doctors will look for certain signs and traits when diagnosing a child with autism such as milestone that a child hasn’t reached, such as cooing or waving by 12 months of age to lack of verbal skills through 24 months of age.  Other factors such as genetic, environmental, family history, sex of child, parent’s age and other disorders can all be a factor when determining if a child a has autism.  There are several treatments and drugs available to help aid the child.  Although there is no cure for autism many behavioral and communication therapies, education therapies and anti psychotic drugs seem to improve the child’s life and learning abilities.

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is still being tested in regard to treating autism, despite the lack of scientific evidence for hyperbaric oxygen therapy as a useful treatment for autism, anecdotal evidence and word-of-mouth have made this an increasingly interesting option to parents of children with autism.
